The Ticknor Society


The Ticknor Society is an organization of book collectors, booksellers, librarians, historians, archivists, conservators, printers, publishers, writers, and all lovers and readers of books. We are dedicated to the enjoyment, promotion, and support of books and book culture. George Ticknor used several bookplates throughout his life, including the small engraved one shown here bearing the motto, "Suum cuique," Latin for "To each his own."

    Reid Byers will be our speaker on March 26th, 2025, at 6:00 pm EDT, talking about his new book "Imaginary Books: Lost, Unfinished, and Fictive Works Found Only in Other Books."

    Reid, a member of the Ticknor Society and current president of our sister Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies organization, the Baxter Society, is also the author of The Private Library, listed among the best non-fiction books of 2021 by the Washington Post. He is the convener of the New England group of the Grolier Club, and of the Living with Books group of FABS. 

    If you missed seeing Reid's recent exhibition of his imaginary books at the Grolier Club in New York, there is another opportunity to see it when it moves next to the Book Club of California in San Francisco.

    On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at the Burns Library, Boston College, Richard Kopley will discuss his just-published book, Edgar Allan Poe: A Life. Publisher's webpage here. The Ticknor Society will be co-sponsoring this public event with the Boston College Libraries. More details to follow in the April newsletter.
