Calligrapher Margaret Shepherd on the making of Song of Songs

Margaret Shepherd gave a presentation about the project that would become her book Song of Songs, the Bible’s Great Love Poems in Calligraphy. She described the range of techniques she used to express specific passages from the text through calligraphy, as well as the challenges she and her publisher, Paraclete Press, encountered when reproducing that art for publication. The original art, 45 pages of tabloid size, combines a wide range of techniques–watercolor, gouache, enamel, spray gold, embossing–with the familiar letterforms of pen calligraphy. Her work focuses mainly on letters, rather than decoration. Ten of the original calligraphic artworks were on view in First Church for the talk.
